EXTRACT

14th November 1940
“Is that one of ours?”  Margery asked as the sound of a plane flew overhead.
“I don’t think so.”  Ben stood up and followed Margery and her brother Jack out of the cottage door.
He was visiting his friend Edith Hunt who lived with her two children and her parents, Thomas and Emma on the outskirts of Coventry.  Being farmers, they were never really short of food like most of the country and they had enjoyed a delicious fayre of roast pork followed by apple pie.  Although food was plentiful there was never any waste.  Emma and Edith knew exactly how much to cook and on the very rare occasion of any leftovers they would be wrapped up for Thomas and Jack to take for their lunch the following day.
“Those poor souls.”  Thomas had joined them in the doorway and the sight that met him filled him with dread and fear.
The city of Coventry was ablaze in the distance.  The sky burned orange and red and the thuds and bangs of bombs dropping could be heard even by them.  Yet still they came.
Ben stood open mouthed as German bombers flew overhead, intent on their destruction of Coventry’s factories.
“Will your mother be ok?”  Margery asked.  At the tender age of seventeen she was already a supervisor at one of the aircraft factories and enjoyed many dances at the American air base even catching herself an American soldier by the name of Harry Quinn.
“As long as she’s in the shelter, she’ll be fine.”  Ben sounded more certain than he felt.  “I built it good and strong.”  The only problem was his mother was always loathe to get in it and it took all his excuses to persuade her so he just prayed that this time, with the mother of all raids happening around her she had shut herself away and was safe underground.
“Go get em boys.”  Jack shouted as they saw a bomber spiral to the ground after a direct hit from the anti-aircraft guns.  Unfortunately they were to learn later that despite firing ten rounds a minute for the entire ten hour raid, this was the only enemy aircraft to be shot down that night.
Emma and Edith brought out blankets and cups of tea and together they stood watching, powerless to help the people of their city.  When the all clear finally sounded at 6:15 am the smoke hung thick and acrid in the air, the flames still burning bright.
When Ben was finally able to return home it was to find that over 4,000 homes had been destroyed and around two thirds of the city’s buildings had suffered damage.  He thanked his lucky stars that his house was out of town and that his street had miraculously avoided any damage.
He made his way into the centre to offer his services and wept at the sight that met him.  The beautiful cathedral had taken a direct hit and only its walls and spire remained, the roof having collapsed onto the inside.
But the people of Coventry would not be beaten.  Within a few months the factories were rebuilt and working to full capacity and despite further attempts by Hitler to cripple the city, the people of Coventry fought on.
