Blurb:

In a modern twist of fairy tales,

what if the beast is a woman instead of a man?

Ethan Scott

I was about to find out when a mysterious job led to the secluded home of a horror novelist. I’d lost everything: my scholarship, my education, and my way. In denial of my family inheritance, I took the unusual employment as a chance out of a hole, but I found myself buried in the unknown trauma of another situation much deeper.

Ella Vincentia

I had changed my name and my address to keep myself hidden, but my scars were more than physical. Living as a recluse in the woods, I was used to being alone, so I wasn’t happy when a certain someone was always in my space. Our first encounter was less than pleasant and tension continued at every attempt to tame me.

Secrets

I knew she was keeping secrets and I wanted to help, but she was cutting me down and cutting me off every time she opened her mouth. Our frustration with one another grew until a misunderstanding changed everything. How can I be the next guy after something so tragic? It was a challenge I wasn’t sure I was willing to take.

Excerpt:

Ethan

I looked directly at her. The blue cloak matched her angered eyes and for a moment I thought I saw something else in them. In her bent over position, she looked down at me and I shivered with excitement thinking she was reaching for me, until she leaned forward further and tried to tip the boat.

“Get out.”

“Are you…” I stopped. I was going to say crazy, insane, cuckoo.

“Say it,” she snapped.

“I wasn’t going to say it,” I lied.

“Yes, you were,” and she reached for the underside of the boat, but could only touch the side, pushing on it.

I still had a hold on the edge of the dock and I let the boat float away a little as if her push had an effect, before I pulled it back.

I knew I was taunting her more.

“I. Said. Get. Out,” and she reached forward again at the same time I pushed the boat away from the dock. Ella lost her momentum and lunged toward me with a look of shear panic. I caught her around the waist as I let go of the dock, but the force of her coming at me pushed us both to the right and we hit the icy cold lake. It was a short drop, and despite the shock of the water, I wrapped one hand around Ella’s head to protect her from hitting the shallow bottom. I slammed my shoulder into the pebbly lake bottom, landing on a rock as I twisted to buffer her fall. I struggled to hold Ella and free my legs that now balanced above me in the kayak.

Once me legs were free, I easily kicked the soft bottom of the lake and righted myself, still clutching Ella around the waist and head. The cold water had been a shock, but the cool air above the surface was additional pins and needles. I sucked in a breath, clenching Ella to me. I heard her gasp for air as she shoved me hard in the chest like she had the day before behind the couch.

“What the hell are you doing?” she yelled.

“Trying to protect you.”

“Well, I don’t need protecting.”

“You almost drowned us,” I returned her growing anger.

“Us? You almost drowned me. Holding me under the water,” she shouted back at me. She had pushed back from me but now stepped awkwardly closer again in the knee-deep water.

“And you ruined my cloak.” Ella looked down at the soggy material and pulled some of it up. The hood fell back when we’d returned to the surface, and her hair fell in heavy waves around her shoulders. The water glistened off it, making it a darker mixture of fall-leaf tones. I held in the moan trying to escape and clenched my hands into fists at my side. I wanted to shake her madly then kiss her passionately.

“You almost drowned me by thinking you could push me out of that boat.”

“Well, you weren’t getting out.”

“What are you? Two? Cut the spoiled bitch act.” Ella gasped in shock as I shook my head and ran both hands through my hair. I didn’t want to get mad at her.

“Funny. Yesterday you said I was beautiful. Today I’m a bitch,” she retorted.

I took two steps toward the dock in my water sodden clothes before I turned to face her again.

“You are beautiful,” I started loudly, angrily, “if you’d just keep your damn mouth shut,” I added in a whisper and finally pushed myself upward onto the dock. She continued to stare at me as I crouched on the wooden platform and offered her my hand.

“Come here,” I said in an unknowingly seductive voice.

“I don’t need your help,” she snapped back, resigned as she walked toward the dock, dragging the soaking wet, heavy material behind her. I stood.

“I get it. You don’t want my help. You don’t want my protection. You don’t want my food,” I spit. “What you need is a good spanking,”…

Author Bio:

I’d like to say I was always a writer. I’d also like to say that I wrote every day of my life since a child. That I took the teaching advice I give my former students because writing every day improves your writing. I’d like to say I have my ten-thousand hours that makes me a proficient writer. But I can’t say any of those things. I did dream of writing the “Great American Novel” until one day a friend said: Why does it have to be great? Why can’t it just be good and tell a story?

As a teenager, I wrote your typical love-angst poetry that did occasionally win me an award and honor me with addressing my senior high school class at our Baccalaureate Mass. I didn’t keep a journal because I was too afraid my mom would find it in the mattress where I kept my copy of Judy Blume’s Forever that I wasn’t allowed to read as a twelve year old.

I can say that books have been my life. I’m a reader. I loved to read the day I discovered “The Three Bears” as a first grader, and ever since then, the written word has been my friend. Books were an escape for me. An adventure to the unknown. A love affair I’d never know. I could be lost for hours in a book.

So why writing now? I had a story to tell. It haunted me from the moment I decided if I just wrote it down it would go away. But it didn’t. Three years after writing the first draft, a sign (yes, I believe in them) told me to fix up that draft and work the process to have it published. That’s what I did. But one story let to another, and another, and another. Then a new idea came into my head and a new storyline was created.

I was accused (that’s the correct word) of having an overactive imagination as a child, as if that was a bad thing. I’ve also been accused of having the personality of a Jack Russell terrier, full of energy, unable to relax, and always one step ahead. What can I say other than I have stories to tell and I think you’ll like them. If you don’t, that’s okay. We all have our book boyfriends. We all have our favorites. Whatever you do, though, take time for yourself and read a book.

Excerpt

As soon as we crossed into the tent, the burn of strong incense made my eyes water. Madame Miranda was sitting at a small table complete with Tarot cards and a crystal ball. She was old and craggy, and when she spoke, her coarse voice made a chill run up my spine.

“I’ve been expecting you boys. I have something to tell you.”

Since it was Myles’ idea to enter the tent, we made him go first. My brain was too foggy from cheap beer to process what she was saying to him, but he went as white as a ghost and shot out of his chair.

“Marcus, come sit down and give me your hand,” she said, and my heart picked up. How does she know my name? “Do as you are told, beast!”

Shit. She knows my nickname too, I thought.

I sat across from her, and she grasped my hand in hers, running her dry, bony fingers along my palm.

“Yes, Marcus, you are quite a beast. But you will find your soul mate in due time. Roses will lead you to her.” She looked up at me and as her eyes bored into mine she gripped my hand tighter. “But be careful, beast. If you keep secrets from your belle rose, your love will fall like petals in winter and you will risk losing her forever.”

Excerpt:
Aya took a deep breath as she made her way to the bar being careful not to look directly in the direction of the jerk supreme. As she poured his drink, she was tempted to spit in it. With each move she made, Aya could feel his heated gaze on her. She wasn’t naive about men like him. They acted like they owned everything they saw. He was toying with them and threatening their livelihood because he could.
She used as much time as she dared to fix his drink before walking toward him, still refusing to make eye contact. Aya forced herself not to slam the glass down in front of him. “Will that be all, sir?” she asked through gritted teeth while she kept her gaze planted on her feet.
“Look at me.”
Aya didn’t want to stare into eyes so deep a green they were almost hypnotizing. They were her favorite shade and she resented the hell out of him for that. Thoughts of her uncle forced her to comply. Slowly, she raised her head until she met his gaze full on. That cruel smirk curved his lips.
“If there’s nothing else, I need to see to the needs of the other customers.”
“I was under the impression from the proprietor that you don’t deal with customers. Which one of you is lying?”
She bit the inside of her lip to hold back an angry retort.
The bastard had the nerve to chuckle. “No need to answer. I can see he was just protecting what’s his. I can’t say I blame him. What are you to him?”
“I don’t think that’s any of your business.”
“Fair enough.” He picked up his drink and took a sip all while his gaze roamed the bar. After placing the glass down, the smirk returned. “How much do you think a place like this would cost if someone wanted to invest for the purposes of tearing it down and rebuilding?”
The blood pounded in her head and she dug her nails into her palms. “He’s my uncle.”
He nodded in seeming approval. “Have a seat, Aya.”
She didn’t like how he used her name as if he had the right but she complied. “Look Mr. O’Shaughnessy, I don’t know what you’re trying to do here, but we don’t want any trouble. We’re sorry if you haven’t found the service to your satisfaction but we just want to be left alone. Please.”
“You seem like an intelligent woman. I would have thought it was fairly obvious what I wanted.”
She folded her hands in her lap and clinched them tightly together to keep herself from trembling. This couldn’t be happening. There had to be a way she could get herself out of this. She opted to play dumb. “I have no clue what you’re talking about.”
He narrowed his eyes. “I think you do. In fact, I know you do. So, let’s not play games. You can make this really easy on yourself. You and your uncle will be taken care of for as long as I want you. And when I no longer do, you’ll be well compensated. You’ll be under my protection.”
She fought back the urge to attack him. The arrogant son of a bitch. “And what if I don’t make things easy on myself?”
“I don’t think you want to know. But the end result will be the same. I will have you.”

I Will Love You For 1000 Years - review

This is a really fantastic read. Although it's short I felt the author did a great job of compacting everything in and at the end I was happy with the way it turned out. I'm saying that because sometimes with a short story I'm wishing there was more at the end.

Garret and Ginger meet by the lake when they are sixteen. They pledge their love to one another. Growing up they lose contact. However they never forget one another. This is their story of how fate can play a part in our lives.

Loved the twist. Really great romantic story. I loved it:)

I Will Love You For 1000 Years

by Garrett Carkos

Genre: Romance (Coming of Age)

Tour Organizer: N K Author Services

A summer romance by a lake turns to forever love. He was born with a gold spoon in his mouth. She was born deaf. Yet, somehow they knew they had found their soul mates. At the end of summer, they blew kisses across the lake, not knowing if they would ever meet again. Years later, they did. The world was their oyster as they traveled the world in style. Their journey of self discovery had them running with the bulls in Pamplona and even enduring the Camino de Santiago, a 700 mile hike known as 'the way'. They had it all. Everyone said they were the happiest and most beautiful couple in the world. Then during a routine Christmas visit back home in Manhattan, everything changed. One would survive. The other wouldn't.

My father was Greek, my step-mother was Italian. I was born in Amsterdam, a product of one of my fathersindiscretions, which should explain why my moral compass is stuck on 'it's ok'.

My family was in the shipping business worldwide. My early years were mostly in Europe and South America. Columbia, Venezuela, Brazil mostly. Living a life of privilege was my heritage, but never realized it until we moved to America.

My teen years were spent in California where I graduated from Beverly Hills High School. Then it was off to Las Vegas and UNLV where I received my degree in marketing. From there, I was off to NYU where I received my degree in journalism.

I apprenticed at NBC for one year as a copy writer, but the chaos of living in Manhattan and the drudgery of touching up field reporters notes were just too much. I disliked cold weather anyway, so I jetted back to Hollywood and went to work in the family business, Carkos Global, as Director of Acquisitions.

It was in Morocco that I first began writing short stories. At first, I thought of it more as a journal or dairy, a way of keeping track of my escapades, but somewhere along the way I discovered I had a knack for erotica and began ghost writing for men's magazines.

I've written over three hundred short stories and published many of them online. Basically, any online publishing site I could find, hey...I slapped something up.

I tend to write things that men can read while getting a haircut, women under hair dryers, factory workers on bathroom breaks, or curious teens behind the garage.

Where my father focused on building his empire, mother was very passionate about the arts; music, painting, opera, sculpting, literature...without which the world would be all vanilla with no toppings.

In my latest story, "I Will Love You For A Thousand Years" I mention hearing Shakespeare from my moms smoky lips (she was a chain smoker) while sitting for hours in the Louve in Paris staring at the masters. I had no clue at eight years old what she saw, or what she was saying, but felt it was important so I soaked it up with my chin in my hands.

My inspiration comes from anything: a sight, a sound, a smell, a neatly turned phrase I hear on TV, kids playing in a park, or simply draw something from my real life and suddenly, I have a story.

I am currently single and living the life in the greatest city in the world. What happens here, stays here...as it should.

Hanging Pawns - review

I loved book one , Adjournment so I was really looking forward to reading this book. I wasn't disappointed as I loved it.

This is Josh and Meas story. Will Josh be able to break down Meas walls? You need to 1-click to find out. These main characters were brilliant. I also loved the secondary characters.

Looking forward to reading more from this author.

Adjournment - review

I loved this book. It's a really brilliant read.

Although I found this a tad slow to start off with once I got into it I was glued.

After graduating high school Sidney leaves everything behind including her boyfriend Simon. Although she makes a new life for herself she can't trust anyone. We read how Sidney and Simon still love each other after all these years. Will they get another chance?

I loved the secondary characters in this book. I rarely find and enjoy a book that makes me laugh out loud. This one did and I thoroughly loved it.

I'm so looking forward to reading more from this author.

Excerpt:

“You’re not leaving… if you leave, I can’t help you. Just stay. We will have a press conference. Explain…” I jump in, cutting my mother off.

“There is nothing to explain… I didn’t do anything wrong.” My brow furrows at what she is trying to insinuate. She shrugs impassively. “Wow, you don’t even believe me.” I shake my head in disbelief.

I look to my father, who is too engrossed in his work to care what we’re discussing.

How can he just sit there ignoring us?

Her brow raises when she looks at him, then she shakes her head as though she’s thinking the same thing I am.

What did I ever do to make you want to pretend as though I don’t exist?

“I can promise you one thing… Princess.” Disdain drips from her lips when she says it.

I sit straight, my shoulders set back, to show I’m not so easily intimidated by her anymore. Although my stomach knots, telling me otherwise. “If you leave this house again, it will be your last time.” Her head tips to the side to study me. “Or… maybe it won’t…” she muses.

It will.

“What incentive do I have to stay?” My lips pucker and curl up with indignation.

There’s nothing she can do once I’m gone this time.

“I would watch your tone.” Her voice drops, making the warning into a threat, before it perks back up. “And don’t make that face, this was your father’s idea.” She nods to him. “Isn’t that right, Dear?” Her teeth clench together as a tight smile forms on her lips.

“Yes, she’s right.” He looks up at me for a split second, a strange but all too familiar look in his eyes, then goes back to working.

The look, if you’re wondering, is what normal people wear when they are guilty of something. But a man who has no care or concern for anyone but himself couldn’t possibly have anything to be guilty of. Unless in some strange twist of events he is deciding to care after years of overlooking me.

That’s highly unlikely though.

Twelve…

I was twelve when he no longer saw me, when he no longer laughed with me, and when I was left to be raised properly… like her… a woman I could never be like.

His wife and my mother…

Her status as a deportee with a permanent ticket to Columbia means they can never be together, but try as he might, this doesn’t stop him from risking his career for her.

He's a man who values honesty above all else, and she lies for a living. Can two people from such different worlds find any common ground?

Excerpt

As inappropriate as the situation had turned out to be, Sarita was his. At least until she returned to Columbia in what? A few days? A week? No matter when, she would go. “No wife or girlfriend to hang out with.”

Her chest deflated with her released breath. He wished he could have taken her air into himself. I’m screwed. “What about you? Are you married or have a boyfriend waiting to break you out of here at the first opportunity?”

Her eyes blazed into his. “Single as single can be.”

The admission sparked something deep within him. He had to touch her. Nothing else mattered except having his fingers glide over her flawless mocha skin. The all-encompassing urge pushed him to stand.

With a controlled effort he strode to the area across from the television and leaned against the wall.

On every unit, one spot existed where neither the cameras nor inmates could see.

Management knew about it, but the cost of adding a third camera would be too expensive for the facility to contemplate so they left it. At least that’s the story Matt had been told.

He’d never used the spot, but as he waited for her to join him, he couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

He motioned her to him with a crook of his index finger. “Come here.”
