Review: Evelina

Evelina Evelina by Ally Vance
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is book one in the Blaires world spinoff and talk about starting off with a bang.

Evelina is a brilliant character. She’s so strong and courageous. Luke gets so much more than he bargained for with her.

This was so so good. I do love a well written twisted story so this was an ideal read for me.

I need to read more by this author. I hope she busy writing 😉
Looking forward to reading more of this series.

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

When high school student James has trouble with his truck, Dylan, who is studying to be a mechanic, comes to the rescue. James thinks he hides his immediate attraction well, but is happy to be wrong when Dylan asks for his number. Since James is new to romance, they take things slowly, and because Dylan is in college, James keeps the budding relationship secret from his overprotective dad.

Across town, Mark, a teacher and single father to James and his sister, Frankie, meets Steve at a bar for what both believe will be a quick hookup. Mark doesn’t see any reason to tell his kids about Steve or press Steve for details about Steve’s adopted son…. It’s just sex between them. Isn’t it?

Two very different love stories grow side by side, each hidden from the other. But all of that changes at a family barbecue, when Mark decides it’s time for his kids to meet Steve and for him to meet James’s boyfriend, who none of them realize is Steve’s son, Dylan. The inevitable explosion means the two couples have some explaining to do to soothe the hurt feelings of their families—and lovers.

Sea Babies - blog tour

Short Description:
Lauren Wilson is travelling by ferry to the Outer Hebrides, about to begin a new job as a social worker. When somebody sits opposite her at the cafeteria table, she refuses to look up, annoyed at having her privacy disturbed. But a hand is pushing a mug of tea towards her, and a livid scar on the back of the hand releases a flood of memories.
Some people believe in the existence of a parallel universe. Does Lauren have a retrospective choice about the outcome of a terrible recent accident, or is it the bearer of that much older scar who has the power to decide what happens to her now?

This is my first read by this author and I really liked it.

Lauren is trying to move on from a tragedy. Nothing seems to go to plan for her.

This isn’t one of those books I jumped right into and read quickly. I actually found myself taking breaks while reading it. I found it slow to start with but once I got into it I really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Genre: MC Romance

#ParkGemmaWeirTour #barenakedwords

I’m a coward. I’ve hidden for the last decade because I can’t tell her the truth. She was my best friend, the greatest love of my life. When it was finally our time, it was all ripped away, ruined by something out of our control.

If I can’t have her then I’d rather be alone, or at least that’s what I thought.

One look was all it took.

One word and I was obsessed.

But friends are all we can ever be.

Or does fickle fate have one last card to play?

Because love is friendship set on fire.

I’m pathetic. For years my best friend has bullied me into doing all manner of stupid, reckless things. This road trip is just another one of them.

Deceit led me to him, but now old lies and new truths could destroy everything.

In a small town, he showed me how big the world was, and now I can’t breathe without him.

He’s my friend, but that’s all he can ever be.

Except, in the blink of an eye the lines between friendship and love have blurred.

Now he’s not just my friend, he’s become my home.

Overture - blog tour

“Swoon-worthy, forbidden, and sexy, Liam North is my new obsession.” – New York Times bestselling author Claire Contreras

Forbidden fruit never tasted this sweet...

Overture, an all new sexy and forbidden love story from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren, is available now!

The world knows Samantha Brooks as the violin prodigy. She guards her secret truth—the desire she harbors for her guardian.
Liam North got custody of her six years ago. She’s all grown up now, but he still treats her like a child. No matter how much he wants her.
No matter how bad he aches for one taste.
Her sweet overtures break down the ex-soldier’s defenses, but there’s more at stake than her body. Every touch, every kiss, every night. The closer she gets, the more exposed his darkest secret.
She’s one step away from finding out what happened the night she lost her family. One step away from leaving him forever.

The previous books I’ve read by this author I’ve loved so I couldn’t resist reading Overture.

Samantha is a violin prodigy who is about to go on a world tour.

Liam has been her guardian since she was young. He’s been her everything.

What will happen with these two broken characters when secrets are revealed?

This is a fabulous forbidden romance that I absolutely loved. Once I started reading I didn’t want to put this story down. Skye has her own unique way with words where you feel the words rather than read them. I’m so looking forward to reading more of this series.

OVERTURE is the first novel in a brand new series from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren.

The memory of our last talk heats the air between us—about condoms and sex. And the way he walked in on me when I moaned his name. God. I’m not sure I can stand another talk like that. “I’m not naive, Liam. I know you took me in because I didn’t have anywhere else to go.”
A muscle in his jaw ticks. “That wasn’t exactly the reason. And even though I didn’t know you before I took custody, I’ve grown to care about you over the years. If I didn’t state it clearly enough, then the fault lies with me. I wasn’t raised to show… affection.”
I stare at him, incredulous. Affection? It’s a cold comfort to a girl who’s always wanted the surety of forever. And the word might as well be alien to a man like him. “I’m going to tour the country. The world. I’m leaving, Liam.”
He looks away. “Christ.”
Unease moves through me. “Did you really think I wouldn’t come back?”
“I don’t know why you would want to.”
“Because I care about you.” Liam is six feet of pure muscle and hard will. There’s no way someone like me could go up against him and win. Except that when I take a step closer, he tenses. Another step and he goes still as stone. It gives me a sense of power, enough that I take the final step. “I care about you even though you’re controlling.”
There’s only an inch between the ruffle of my blouse and the flat of his abs.
“You think I’m going to apologize for keeping you safe?” he mutters. “You think I give a damn that you’re mad at me as long as you’re in one piece? That’s the only thing that matters.”
“Because you think of me like a daughter?”
He shakes his head slowly, not breaking eye contact. “No.”
“No?” I whisper.
“When I walked in on you…” His voice is hoarse. “I didn’t think of you like a daughter.”
I should probably be horrified that he would think about me in any way other than family, except I’m the one who started it. I take a step closer, and there’s nowhere for him to go. He’s already backed up against the wall. This big, strong man who could probably make a whole army quake—or at least a battalion. And he’s cornered by me.
This close I can see the green of his eyes, so dark they’re almost emerald, flecked with gold. A scar bisects one dark eyebrow, probably a scar from something terrifying and deadly.
“How did you think of me?” I’m afraid to know the answer, but I’m even more terrified of never knowing. Of being a nameless, faceless body in that writhing crowd, hooking up with a stranger when the man I really want is standing right in front of me, inches away, his breath a feather-touch on my forehead.
A small shake of his head. “It’s not right.”
I’m not sure what right and wrong mean when it comes to us, but I know what it means for music. Someone can play a piece with perfect timing and notation. They can hit every single note, but it still won’t have passion. That part comes from inside. “Then be wrong with me. Don’t make me do it alone.”
I push up on my toes, pressing my lips against his in a blind, artless kiss. I’m off center of his mouth, kissing the corner. He stands still as a statue, letting me wobble on my heels, letting me fall against him, only my broken kiss to balance me.
Grief beats against my ribs. He’s going to make me do it alone. Of course he is. I’m always alone. A small sound escapes me. Loneliness. Pain. It vibrates against his mouth, sound made real.
He jolts as if I’ve shocked him. Something unspools inside him. I feel it in the inch of air between us. And then I feel it in my lips. He takes over the kiss with shocking possession, his hand behind my head, his body turning us so I’m against the wall. He looms in front of me, blocking out the view. There are no vinyl records on the wall, no bass thrumming through concrete and steel. There’s only him, only this. How is it possible that only a few minutes ago I felt powerful? I didn’t know what this would be. I couldn’t know the way I’d revel in surrender.
His tongue touches the seam of my lips, a pure electric sensation that makes me jump. I part my lips in surprise, pulling in the scent of him—man and earth, salt and sea. He tastes elemental. His tongue swipes the tender inside of my bottom lip. It’s more sensitive there than I could have imagined. I feel the slickness of the caress all the way in my core. My thighs clench together.
So careful. So wary. I touch my tongue against his. He’s the one who groans.
His hand fists in my hair, creating a delicious little ache. “Do you know what you’re doing to me?” he breathes, and I try to shake my head; it only makes him pull harder.
“Liam… I need…” It’s like the bedroom when he walked in on me, my hips rocking, mindless, hungry. Worse than that. My whole body is moving restlessly against him.
He tears himself away with a hard sound. Only an inch away. A rough tremor runs through him. It’s a small comfort, knowing that I’ve moved this man. Knowing how much control he has, knowing it’s eroded. But only a small comfort. He still leaves me panting against the door.
“I’m supposed to protect you,” he says, his voice taut with guilt.

About the book
Charlie Maddison loves being an architect in London, but when she finds out her boyfriend, Dominic, is actually married, she runs back to the beautiful countryside of Westenbury and her parents.
Charlie’s sister Daisy, a landscape gardener, is also back home in desperate need of company and some fun. Their great-grandmother, Madge – now in her early nineties - reveals she has a house, Holly Close Farm, mysteriously abandoned over sixty years ago, and persuades the girls to project manage its renovation.
As work gets underway, the sisters start uncovering their family’s history, and the dark secrets that are hidden at the Farm.
A heart-breaking tale of wartime romance, jealousy and betrayal slowly emerges, but with a moral at its end: true love can withstand any obstacle, and, before long, Charlie dares to believe in love again too…

‘I bet all the farmers round here don’t think it’s a waste when he’s out with them in the middle of the night pulling foals and calves out of their labouring mothers.’ Dad
was a vet, very much in the manner of All Creatures Great and Small, and a pretty good one if the huge number of bottles of whisky and wine that came our way each
Christmas from grateful farmers was anything to go by.
Vivienne nodded sadly. ‘Yes, I’m sure your father is a jolly good vet – look at him now with that dog of his – but he would have made a brilliant actor had he been allowed to follow in my footsteps rather than his father’s. He could have been a northern George Clooney with that chest hair and those eyebrows.’ She looked me up and down. ‘And you still haven’t any inclination…?’
‘None whatsoever,’ I said firmly, shaking my head so she was in no doubt that I might ever abandon my career and start treading the boards. ‘I absolutely love what I’m doing in London. What I was doing.’
‘And this, this lothario of yours? Surely, darling, you must have had a tiny smidgen of an idea that he was married?’ Vivienne raised an eyebrow.
Had I? Part of me had perhaps wondered if he had another woman somewhere when he was always off, particularly at weekends, but I was so in love with him that I
suppose I’d just buried my head and didn’t question him or the situation.
‘Vivienne, I promise you, I had absolutely no idea he was married. I don’t do married men.’
‘But, if you worked for him as well, surely the other people in the office would have known? Surely one has some inkling whether the boss is married or not?’
I shook my head. ‘I’m obviously one thick woman.’ I felt the tears start once more and swallowed them down. ‘Dominic said to keep it quiet at the office that we were
an item. That the others wouldn’t like it that the new girl was living with the boss. So, I did.’
Vivienne tutted. ‘Oh, dearie, dearie me. And you fell for that one?’
‘Vivienne, stop it, leave her alone.’ Mum came into the kitchen and filled the kettle. ‘Charlie appears to have been had over good and proper. I can’t see it would
have gone on for much longer, had his wife not got in there first.’
‘You didn’t suspect anything, did you, Mum? When you met him?’ I pleaded, not wanting to be the only one who’d been taken in.
Mum shook her head and I smiled gratefully at her. ‘No, Dad and I both thought he was charming. We had absolutely no reason to think he was married with – how many kids is it, Charlie?’ When I couldn’t reply, Mum went on, ‘If you want acting ability, Vivienne, there’s your man.’
I put my head on the breakfast table. ‘What am I going to do now?’ I wailed into the crumbs left behind from Dad’s toast and marmalade. They tasted sweet and
buttery on my cheeks and lips as my tongue sought them out. ‘My life is over at the age of twenty-eight. I don’t have a job, a home or a man.’
Vivienne took my hand, pulling me up from the breakfast table and, aping Ethel Merman, began to sing lines from Annie Get Your Gun. Daisy, trailing dirt and wet in
from the garden, where she’d obviously been doing something gardenerish, joined in singing right on cue with Dad and Vivienne while Malvolio, used to such bursting
forth of song, slunk despondently towards his basket, tail between his legs, as the three of them went for it. I looked at the dog, at Mum, in a world of her own clearing the breakfast table, and at Vivienne, Dad and Daisy united in their love of drama and musicals, and wished I had a tail and basket of my own.
I knew I was home.
