Blue Atkins walked the glossy concrete floor of the arena, trailing Flay, the lead singer of the band. His pulse jumped in time to the thump of drums and muted racket of cheers, whistles, screams. They rounded the last corner and climbed the steps to the back of the stage where the racket became an ear-numbing roar.

His stomach twitched along with his pulse. Sweaty hands made it hard to hold his guitar. He slid the strap over his neck so it didn’t slip from his fingers and crash to the floor.

The other two members of Towering Puddle were on stage for the drum solo they played at every concert. In the back of his mind, he wondered how they kept from getting bored, playing the same songs every night. He tried to push the question to the front of his mind to use as a distraction, but it couldn't compete with the swirling flurries of panic.

He'd never played for a crowd bigger than five. This was a sold-out concert at BC Place, an audience of thousands. He didn't know how many thousand exactly and promised to punch anyone who told him.

Flay rested a hand on his shoulder, leaning close to be heard over the crowd. He hoped Flay couldn't feel the quivering under his skin.

"Got your earphone in?" Flay asked.

Blue nodded in short, quick jerks and touched shuddering fingers to the insert in his ear that allowed him to hear the music.

"You'll go out first. Walk all the way across and stand near Ash."

He pinned his gaze to the man on the far side of the stage, adding a hint of guitar to the crash of drums.

"When it's over, take a bow and leave from that end, okay?"

"Got it," he yelled.

"If you lose your place during the song pantomime until you pick it up again. It's no big deal." Flay squeezed his shoulder. "Rock and roll has only one unbreakable rule. No puking in front of the fans."

"Big help. Thanks."

The blast of cheers when Mason finished beating the drums swept the words away. Mason and Ash had time for a brief wave to the audience before the lights dimmed. Flay pushed Blue out of the wing and onto the stage. The torrent of sound rolling up from the crowd rattled his lungs and kicked his heart into a new rhythm.

Mason set the beat for the next song and Blue used it to move his legs, striding across the stage, unable to ignore the landscape of faces visible in the first several rows. Hands in the air, mouths open, they screamed while the remaining members of the band picked up their instruments.

Ash helped him find the waiting amplifier cord and plug in his guitar. Blue rubbed trembling fingers on his jeans and took a few deep breaths to calm the internal bedlam. It only made him dizzy.

The lights went up and Flay began playing. Blue mumbled a mantra to the same tune.

"I won't barf on the stage. I won't barf. Flay'll kill me if I do. I won't barf."

She has had her shirt ripped off by a jealous orangutan, hand-fed grapes to fruit bats, played tug-o-war with a three-toed sloth, and escorted an elephant down Pete Rose Way in the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade. The morning after, Vladimir and I shared an intimate breakfast on the balcony and noshed on fresh local fruit, steel-cut oats with warm milk, yoghurt and honey, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Seagulls stalked our mini buffet from the sky and Vladimir’s eyes sparkled in the Florida sunshine as we talked and laughed and enjoyed our privacy. In the weeks I had known him, I had never seen him so relaxed and happy.

           He leaned over and kissed my cheek. Yalyublyutebya.”

           His unshaven cheeks felt sandpapery against my skin. “What does it mean?”

           “I love you.”

I curled my finger around one of his ringlets. “Yalyublyutebya.”

           As we noshed and enjoyed the sunshine and salty ocean air, I couldn’t ignore Boris calling me on the special phone. I’d heard it going off in my purse for, like, the billionth time. “I’d better get that. It might be important.”

“My phone has been going off all morning, too.”

           I could tell by his expression he was amused, rather than alarmed, but nonetheless I was a little freaked considering I had lied to everyone and jetted off to Miami with my dad’s boss. Maybe someone had found out, and Boris was trying to warn me.

           I ran inside and lifted the ringing phone. “What’s wrong?”

           “Dobroyeutro. Good morning.” Boris sounded relieved. “Everything okay?”

           I glanced outside. Vladimir motioned for me to join him. “I’m khorosho.” I went back outside and curled up on his lap. He wrapped his arms around my belly. His touch excited me. I sucked in a deep breath.

           “What’s wrong? Is boss there?”

           “I’m with Vladimir now.” I turned my head and smooched his lips. “Vladimir is khorosho, too.” He tickled me and I giggled.

           “I take it you and Vladimir had a khoroshiy evening together?”

           “Da.”

           “Good girl. Call if you need anything.”

The Social Club- my review

Firstly I've got to  admit I wasn't keen on the blurb of this book. A seventy year old newspaper reporter called Mack didn't seem like my kinda read. Boy was I in for a surprise with this story. Mack was certainly young at heart. 

I ended up reading this in one sitting as I felt compelled to read 'just one more chapter'. Then all of a sudden I knew I wasn't putting it down until I'd finished it. 

Although we hear the stories of a few characters the main character is Mack who I really liked. The storyline flowed and the characters came across as real. A few unexpected twists had me giving a virtual thumbs up to the author.

This book has proven to me just why I love blogging. To be approached by an author to review his book is an honour. I'm just shocked that this is the first review for this book on goodreads. 

In my honest opinion this book deserves the five stars I'm giving it. The story is faultless. The author shocked me in that I loved it more than I thought I would. Lastly I needed to read it in one setting. 

Apologies to the author for not reading this sooner. I'm looking forward to reading more of his books.

About the author

I've always enjoyed writing, and probably got it honestly from my dad. He was the sports editor on a daily newspaper for several decades. In the 10th grade I remember almost failing English composition. The teacher said she knew that I was getting outside help because my stuff was "too good." She gave me F's on nearly everything I turned in.

Marrying at a young age, I soon had a family to support and writing was no where near the table. In my 50's, I met "Ella" and she shared her powerful story with me. I wanted to write it down and tell the world about this strong, young woman. She was agreeable on the condition that I change the names and geography, so that her identity would remain a secret.  

The Social Club is pure fiction, although I've put several of my friends into the story. It's a quick read, but I don't see any point in making a story longer than it needs to be. If I live long enough, I hope to fill this page with a lot of stories.

Piqua, Ohio is home for me, my fantastic wife, Kathy, and our two cats. This community has a beautiful bike path that I'm on every chance I get, riding my recumbent, tadpole trike.
