Prologue

Justice

The van is hot as hell. I’m watching the house across the street because I know he’s in there. The fucking dick!

I know for a fact he hasn’t left because I’ve been sitting here all fucking day.  It’s finally dark, and any time now the little shit is going to leave the house. Then he’s mine.

Cowboy’s with me, but he’s been quiet the whole time.  He’s still hurting over losing Cassie and I can’t blame him, it’s only been a few months.  Satan may be dead, but it doesn’t stop the guilt we all feel that we weren’t quick enough to save her, nor smart enough to work out what was going on under our own roof.

I straighten up in my seat as I see the hallway light go out. I nudge Cowboy awake, motioning towards the house.  It’s time.

I clench my fists as I watch Ted walk over to his car. The slimy piece of shit has been leading my sister on, no fucking way am I letting him off with that shit! My sister means everything to me. Ted is unlocking his car door, when my arm goes around his throat.  My approach as always is silent. Deadly.

“What? Who? You can’t do this to me.” He starts to protest, struggling in my arms.

“Shut the fuck up.  You’re going to walk over to that van, quiet as a mouse or I’ll start carving pieces of you off as we walk. Choice is yours.”  I whisper the words harshly in his ear.  As soon as he hears my voice he knows who I am.  What I am.  It’s enough to cause him to freeze in terror.  Cowboy groans in disgust. I tense as I realize what Ted’s done. Shit! The bloody coward’s gone and wet himself.  Not only is he a dick, he’s a fucking coward too.

“Please don’t kill me.” He whimpers. Yep. He’s a fucking pussy all right.

If I were him, I’d put up a fight. Stand my ground and be a man! Not whimper and beg. Men like him make me sick.

“I’m not going to kill you Ted.” I reassure him. Although it is really fucking tempting.  “That would be far too quick and painless.”  Ted whimpers some more so I tighten my hold around his neck. God I’d love to snap it! “I told you to be fucking quiet.” I command.

I practically have to drag Ted the few yards from his driveway to the van. Being careful not to let his piss stained trousers touch me.  Cowboy’s ready and waiting for me, the sliding door open.  He reaches into his back pocket, a move that causes Ted to start whimpering again.  What a fucking wimp.  What the fuck did my sister see in him? I’ll never understand it.

Cowboy withdraws some black cable ties from his pocket and uses them to secure Ted’s wrists behind him. He moves to his ankles, doing the same.

“For fuck’s sake Ted.” Cowboy complains. “You a little momma’s boy? You’ve gone and pissed yourself like one.” There’s disgust in Cowboy’s voice.

He pushes Ted face first into the back of the van.  Ted is hampered by the ties but manages to crawl a little further in, allowing me to slide the door shut. Not that I’d care if I trapped anything anyway!  Cowboy jumps in the passenger seat next to me and I start the van. Moving slowly at first with the headlights off, until I hit the end of the street.  The less any busybody neighbors see around here the better.

I only drive for a few minutes before I hit the trail road I’m looking for.  This abandoned shack is perfect for what I have planned for this evening.  It’s far enough from the town that no one will hear Ted scream. And I intend to make him scream, a lot.

Cowboy and I came here earlier to set up.  Everything we need is inside.  Cowboy drags Ted from the rear of the van none too carefully.  Because of the ties on his ankles he can’t walk.  Thanks to wetting himself Cowboy refuses to throw him over his shoulder and carry him. Instead, he grabs him by the wrist ties and drags him along the rough dirt path.  That must hurt, but to be fair, considering what I have planned for him, that’s nothing.

Ted’s eyes go wide when we enter the shack and he sees the chain hanging over the solid wooden beam.  Cowboy quickly secures him to it as I lean against the wall, listening to Ted’s whimpering. It’s really getting on my fucking nerves. Cowboy moves out of the way as soon as he’s done and I grin.  Ted’s hanging by his arms, his feet not quite able to touch the floor and take any of the weight.

I slowly walk up to him.  When I’m standing so close that we’re practically nose to nose Ted’s breathing quickens.  I’m taller than he is.  It’s just something else in the long list of things I don’t like about him.

I see the look of absolute fear in his eyes and it gets me hard. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not fucking gay but hurting people that I hate, that deserve it, gets me worked up and Ted really deserves it for what he has done to my sister!  My reputation precedes me.  Ted may think he knows what’s coming tonight. Trust me, he hasn’t a clue.  What he imagines and what I have planned are poles apart.

“You’re not going to die tonight Ted.” There’s a spark of hope in his eyes. A little hint of relief and I can’t allow that.  “You’re going to wish you were dead though. So much so, that you will beg me to kill you.”

Pieces of Autumn - review

This is a really brilliant dark read. I can't believe this is a debut novel. It's fantastic. It's not as dark as it could have been but I'm thinking this author is just breaking us in gently to her style of writing.

I thought that the fact it was based in the future would put me off but it didn't.

This is one of them books that I loved & enjoyed reading even though at the back of my mind I was thinking it's wrong to love it lol

I'm so looking forward to reading more by this author. Great read. Highly recommend if your looking for a dark romance.

~ Book Synopsis ~

I wish I could tell you that I was stolen.

Kidnapped off the street in some third-world country, sold against my will, while a desperate family back home waited and prayed and talked about me on the news.

I wish I could tell you that, because then you might understand.

What really happened? I walked to my fate with my eyes wide open. But before you say I deserved whatever happened to me, you should know. I was desperate. I was alone. I was afraid for my life. You would have done the same thing.

I thought things couldn’t possibly get any worse.

But then, I woke up in darkness, unable to move. There was only one thing I was sure of: I wasn’t alone anymore.

And then I heard HIS voice...

Excerpt

“Never say that word to me.”

I had never heard his voice like that. Not once. My blood chilled in my veins. If I thought I’d ever been afraid of Tate before, it was nothing. Absolutely nothing compared to this.

I’d wanted to unnerve him, but instead, I seemed to have unhinged him. Unleashed something I didn’t understand, and didn’t want to.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

“Too late,” he replied, his chest rising and falling rapidly with each breath. His tone was pure venom, pure sin, pure fucking evil. “Too late for apologies.”

In that moment, I had three choices.

I could fight him.

I could run.

Or, I could tie myself to the mast and meet him, measure for measure.

I chose the storm. With the hurricane himself standing there, his pulse pounding so loud I could almost hear it, I chose to stand tall.

What was happening? What was he about to do? I had no way of knowing, no way of guessing what he’d do. How he’d ruin me.

But I knew I could survive.

His hand lashed out and grabbed mine, lifting it to his face. Eyes half-lidded, he brought my fingers to his lips, my thumb pressing past them and up against his teeth. Finding resistance, for a moment, until he parted them and suckled it into the soft, wet heat of his mouth.

Into The Light - review

This is a really fantastic read. Picked up where book one ends I highly recommend you go and read Into The Darkness first. This is two fantastic books that you will love.

Book one was fantastic. Twists and turns had me gripped. Then it ended in a cliffhanger and I seriously couldn't wait for this book. The author didn't disappoint me. I loved this book even more if that's possible.

This is a really rollercoster of a ride. Charlie and Lex have so many ups and downs that I didn't know how to feel. I was hoping for a happily ever after but the author gave me no clues throughout like a great author does.

The raw  love these two felt for each other exploded onto my kindle. I felt as if I went through their pain with them.

I read this in one day. Anytime I put my kindle down my mind was still on the story.

Highly recommend these two books. I loved them.

Into the Light (The Dark Angel Series)

by Kat T. Masen

Publication: August 23, 2014

Synopsis

“I need to tell you why I was so afraid to fall in love with you again. Why from the moment I saw you in the restaurant I tried to deny any feelings I still had for you. Why I pushed you away, why I lied to you that day in the hospital… It all started during the summer break of 2005, exactly sixty days since the last time I had seen you…”

He was the Dark Angel. He came and stole what she had desperately tried to hold onto: her heart. Charlie Mason thought she knew better until her insecurities overruled and she again believed he broke her.

In a bid to finally find their happily ever after, Lex and Charlie find themselves on a journey of learning how to love again. They began a new future to move forward from a broken past, but life is never so easy. When you finally have the one thing you’ve always wanted, what do you do when that place of darkness finds its way back, shattering everything you fought so hard to have?

This is the final story of Lex and Charlie, two souls that were brought back together in a twist of fate. An eternal love that has been through every storm, dragged into the dark abyss without a chance of climbing out, but through all the battles they find themselves in a place they call home, away from the darkness and away from the fear. With a glimmer of hope, they look directly into the light.

Excerpt

Finally he pulled me in, our lips only inches apart. His warm breath lingered in the air between us. I closed my eyes, waiting in anticipation to feel his lips against mine, but it was his finger I felt, tracing my bottom lip.

My chest rising and falling at a fast pace, I shivered from his touch. His mouth lingered on my bottom lip, and what only was seconds but felt like hours, he gently sucked on my lip, savoring this moment. Everything that

weighed heavily on my shoulders slowly lifted as his kiss spread throughout me, shining a light on every part of me that had been encased in darkness. He was mine, and I was his. And I knew that I wanted his kiss for the rest of my life and nobody else’s. He was the one... He was always the one.

Excerpt:

Two thousand seven dollars and twenty-one cents.

At breakfast, Andrew strictly prohibited me from checking the mail, which would only serve to worry me.

I stared blankly at the mortgage statement, my calloused thumb fingering its sharp edges nervously. The ink blurred as chilling raindrops fell hastily from the darkening sky.

Maybe we should have bought a cheaper house.

I closed my fatigued eyes, lifting my face to the taunting raindrops as I clumsily sat down beside my ornately designed, wrought iron mailbox. I remembered, with more than a twinge of sadness, the day Grace picked it out. Giddy with excitement about my new position at work, we splurged.

I wanted to cry, but couldn’t; only a lone, sharp breath escaped. The numbness that had replaced my pain was paralyzing. The rain rolled softly down my swollen cheeks, replacing the tears that would not fall. I cringed as the water melted my mascara into my already irritated eyes.

Dr. Wilson said I could take antidepressants, but I stubbornly refused to risk damaging Calla as she continued to develop during these miserable weeks. Nothing but my blood pressure pills and vitamins would enter my bloodstream.

I told myself I could tough it out.

My heart started thumping ferociously again, and I knew I should go inside and rest. I struggled to lift myself to my feet, fighting the dizziness that inhabited my present world.

If only someone would rescue me...

The wind whipped threateningly around our beautiful home, savaging the sky, sharply swaying the flimsy trees and delicate flowers. Our beautiful home, the one I could lose.

How will we take care of Calla? My tears blended with the raindrops.

Go inside, Jana. The whisper sifted through the storm, the only sound not trapped in the unrelenting wind.

I tried to block out the income we would lose, the fear of being a new mother, the seizing pain of rejection, and the daunting reality of job searching while trying to figure out how to be a mother. I tried to remember when I was healthy, happy, and peaceful. When my existence was more than an unceasing panic attack.

I needed to get up off the ground. The dizziness threatened to overtake me, creeping through my puffy legs into my fingers, arms, and throbbing head. The familiar pounding of my heart permeated through my veins.

Thump, thump, thump thump thump thump...

It was too late. I think I remember smiling as a memory of Grace and me playing softball as children flashed through my mind; she slammed a home run, and I happily picked dandelions in the outfield as the crowd cheered her on. And then I passed out again.

~Eighteen Months Earlier~

The moment Andrew shocked me with his abrupt announcement will be forever etched in my memory. The prelude to the earthquake that shattered my picture perfect life.

Naturally, he waited until after we had some especially erotic sex to break the news. He’d bought me a new book for Valentine’s Day, taking full advantage of having a wife who was rocked with the libido of a sixteen-year-old boy, but much to his relief had the decency not to fool around on him. Since Fifty Shades of Grey was too wild for his taste, he’d downgraded to some Kama-Sutra-like knock-off. Despite my unfeminine-like ability to separate sex and the rest of our marriage (I had no problem doing it angry, ever), I was livid at his timing. I had bent my body totally out of proportion, even for an ex-gymnast, and had not even really enjoyed it (if he had waited five more minutes for me to really wake up, perhaps I would have rocked his world), and now this? I had barely thrown on my robe and piled my rat’s nest of hair into a messy ponytail before he dropped the bombshell on me.

So seemingly insignificant, a ray of hope that could bring me home to Mama and Grace. Words that should be celebrated later: “Remember when...?” Words that should not be attached to bitterness and loss.

“Jana, Anthony wants to move into the management training program next year. That would open up a spot in my division in Fairhope.”

I froze, my steaming cup of hot cocoa at my lips. At least he had been gentleman enough to get me a drink post-tryst before royally ruining my day. “What?!” My marshmallows fizzled, victim to the steam.

Somehow, we found ourselves “at home” in Birmingham, Alabama. In our starving-college-student eyes, money started pouring in, accompanied by that vainly sought after emotion that most call happiness. Daddy lost his job when I started college, and I worked my tail off to keep my family from struggling. I barely landed a “B” average, but my work ethic sold me when my grades couldn’t. After years of pushing cell phones, an internship led to my dream job with Covington Company, one of the largest medical device manufacturers in the country. My persistence paid off with a respectable salary topped with generous commissions, an almost-free, brand new pearl-white Nissan Maxima, top-notch health benefits, and a growing pension, not to mention a handsome husband on my right arm, and the keys to the apartment right next to the pool. As my annoyingly optimistic mother, Mama, would say, “Sounds like waking up to a chocolate cupcake every morning and never gaining a pound.”

The product I sold was extremely popular, largely due to our monster sales force and the undeniable power of the teary-eyed, life-changed actress on our overdone television commercials. I upgraded from eating fast food on the fly, often dollar menu, to eating five-star free meals with customers on the regular. Childless and adventurous, I loved the frequent trips that accompanied my position: “training” in New York City, “launches” in Los Angeles and Orlando, a “leadership conference” in Las Vegas. Second honeymoons in cool places kept our marriage spicy; Andrew would fly out for a few days and shack up in my room when feasible.

The son of a former United States senator and a holier-than-thou former swimsuit model (try living up to that), Andrew inherited his daddy’s charm and brains, topped off with his mama’s good looks. Naturally, he was setting a clear path to climb the ladder at his accounting firm. Andrew was seriously hot in a suit and tie, and I grew used to fighting off the stares of the hungry women at company functions. At a meet-and-greet with a promising new client, one plastic woman in her mid-forties, after too many glasses of chardonnay, actually suggested that I let her borrow Andrew for the night. She guaranteed that he would return to me a better lover. I could even watch if I wanted. Better yet, I could join if we were game for that sort of thing.

I wondered how long she had been fantasizing about sleeping with my husband.

He nearly choked on the sip of Corona he was in the process of swallowing. I imagine the first thought that ran through his mind was, Great, Jana’s never going to let me out of her sight with my coworkers now. I smiled coolly and said, “No, thanks. We don’t play that way. You can look, but if I find out you touched him, I will make your life a living hell.” I strived to practice moderation, but I had downed a glass or two ... or three ... of wine, enough to chill me out but give me courage.

Nevertheless, he enjoyed his job, and I enjoyed watching him in the limelight.

We were living a dream, but I wanted to live the dream in Fairhope. My real home. Home was where Mama invited us over for homemade lasagna once a week, where Grace made me laugh until my sides hurt, and not through the cracked speakers of my worn out iPhone, but as we sipped steaming mochas downtown at Page and Palette—where the glistening water and fabulous Orange Beach were only a short drive away.

Author Info:

Laura Lexington is a Contemporary Women’s Fiction and Contemporary Romance author. Her debut novel contains elements of suspense and explores elements of every part of life – love, sex, friendship, careers, faith, social issues, and family. She lives in the Southern United States with her family, where she hates the humidity but loves being close to the beach. She is the proud mother of one daughter, a rambunctious five year old who chopped her glorious hair the first week of kindergarten, and is the most awesome wife ever (or so she likes to think). When she’s not daydreaming up future stories, she’s wearing out her Kindle, thinking about shaking the dust off her treadmill, or planning her next trip to Orange Beach.

Laura works full time, and unlike the main character in her debut novel, is thankful to work for a company that recognizes employee talent regardless of age, race, or gender, and provides many opportunities for development. She firmly believes in the power of a good housekeeper, a strong cup of coffee (or two or three), and a novel that makes one’s senses spin with all the good stuff – drama, love, suspense, sex. If dancing with her rambunctious five-year-old in the kitchen counts as working out, she exercises daily, usually after several desserts she couldn’t resist.

A Beautiful Thought - review

This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. It's my first read by this author and I really enjoyed it.

This is Damon and Gails beautiful romantic story. As you can imagine it's not all ups but the author did a great job with the downs. The relationships of the main characters with their families were brilliant. I found it a refreshing read.

Highly recommend. Great holiday read.

Synopsis

She can track down the world's most dangerous drug lords, hack into any computer, and kill a man in fifteen different ways—but when she comes face-to-face with the only man who’s ever held her heart, it might be her most dangerous mission yet... Or is it?

Sloan Walker. Dr. Felicia SantoraAgent L-55.
Three very different personas, three very different names, but all have one thing in common. They’re all controlled, acted out, and lived by one woman.

Her past has been long forgotten. Ten years have gone by since someone remembered the girl she used to be. The young girl with the big-brown eyes and beautiful dreams of happiness, dreams of love. She now lives a clandestine life. A life filled with top-secret missions and covert assignments. Only a handful of people know the true nature of her job. Her safety is constantly being pushed towards the brink of life-threatening danger.

Then one day someone unexpectedly steps back into her life…

A man who once owned her mind, body, and soul.
A man who held her heart in the palm of his hand.

He remembers. He knows.

And this knowledge could threaten everything she’s worked so hard for. Nixon West is as intelligent as they come and his Navy SEAL training has made him one of the most dangerous weapons in the United States Military. The moment she reappeared into his life he promised himself that he wouldn't let her go.

But the true question is…what extreme lengths will Nix go to for her?

She will soon face another mission.

And it will test everything.

Time never seems all that important until your life hangs in the balance.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock…

About N.A.

I march to the beat of my drum. Can you hear that? That perpetual bang, bang, bang that’s continually drumming relentlessly inside of my head. Oh, that’s just me? Never mind then, carry on…

Beautiful words, lovely plot lines, and COFFEE...Three of my favorite things.

I savor the weird, embrace the pervy, and willingly open both arms to anything that will make me laugh.

My obsession is books. I like to read them, write them, and inhale them in any way my ravenous mind will allow.

I’m awkward and sarcastic and can’t take a proper selfie if my life depended on it.

I was once told by my high school English teacher that my colorful ability to state the obvious would be my biggest weakness. I thanked him and made it my life’s mission to make that my biggest strength.

At times, I’m bordering on obscene and have strongly considered tattooing the words Approach With Caution on some part of my body.

Procrastinator at heart who tries to tell herself that she’ll meet every deadline.

Tomorrow. I’ll finish it tomorrow, I swear.
