25 Years of Collected Poems in Major’s Everyday Objects

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI – Native St. Louisian Mark David Major, author of Mars Rising and The Persistence of Memory and Other Plays, has been writing since he attended Collinsville Senior High School on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River during the mid-1980s. Major was born and raised in the South St. Louis neighborhood of Tower Grove. However, he did not really begin writing poetry in earnest until 1987 while attending Clemson University in South Carolina for dual-degrees in History and Architectural Design. He also holds postgraduate degrees from University College London in the United Kingdom including his Doctorate of Philosophy in Architecture. His earliest poetic efforts did not meet with much success with even Major admitting his earliest poems “weren’t very good.” Since then, he has worked tirelessly to hone his craft as a poet. The startling results are visible in a definitive collection of more than 130 poems written by Major over the last 25 years in Everyday Objects: Collected Poems, 1987-2012. The collection brings together previously published poems including beloved ones like “Pale Bloom” and “Empty Words” with more provocative offerings such as “God’s Feast” and “Purchased Inertia.” The last of which London’s The View From Here Magazine published in 2011. Everyday Objects collects these poems with a number of never-before-seen ones representing underground experiments in free verse, extended haiku structure, and what the author describes as “antithesis poetry.” The book pairs each poem with a black and white illustration of an ordinary object, hence the book’s title. Major hopes “readers will interpret what the object might mean to them in light of the poem or vice versa.” Everyday Objects represents a poet at the height of his powers in crafting language to create new meanings and interpretations. Everyday Objects: Collected Poems, 1987-2012 by Mark David Major is a 270-page with black and white illustrations published by Carousel Books, available in print and digital format - with improved formatting for Kindle - for purchase from the following online booksellers:
