Hell Yeah!: All the King’s Horses

One million-dollar horse.

One family farm.

One Jersey Girl with an attitude.

One recipe for complete disaster.

Well, if anyone had asked RJ Miller, anyway. To make matters worse, he started the whole deal firmly planted on the wrong foot--and Lucy da Silva made sure he knew it.

Visiting the Double Down Ranch outside Austin, Lucy is there with her sister to purchase a stock of breeding horses for her family back in New Jersey. She knows her horses. She knows her farms. She knows her mind--and she knows she doesn't like RJ Miller.

Despite the rocky start, RJ finds himself falling for the high-spirited woman. It seems like there's nothing she can't do: ride, rope, clean, cook, and dance. Lucy can't seem to stay away from RJ either, and they find themselves riding more than horses.

If only life were simple: find the girl, fall in love, happily ever after. But with people plotting to get their hands on Double Down's beautiful thoroughbred, King's Dominion, Lucy has to admit a truth she hid years ago to save RJ's sister and her own life...

EXCERPT

Tearing over the ground as fast as he could, he kept Lucy and Birch in sight. She was getting way too close to the flames, but stopped before she coaxed Birch through. RJ skidded to a halt next to her.

“You insane woman!”

“You brought rope, awesome. We need to get the foal out. Mom can’t do it on her own.”

“This is a wild mare with offspring. Let me.”

“RJ, trust me. Please. I’ll get the foal out faster than you can imagine.”

Before he lodged a good protest with sound logic, Lucy was down in the gulch, with his rope.

She held it out to the mother for her inspection first, the mother sniffing and tasting, shockingly allowing her to pat her nose. A moment later, with her hand still on the mother’s nose, she had the rope around the foal’s neck. She dropped it, and releasing the mother, looped it under his back haunches—effectively making a handle for the foal. She led it to the shallower end, away from the fire, and tossed the length up to RJ.

He caught it and moved so the foal could help them lift it out. With a hard shoulder shove from Lucy on his rump, the small animal climbed out as RJ pulled and was up and on stable ground in under two minutes. He pulled off his shirt and tied it over the foal’s eyes to keep him calm.

He looked back to the gulch to see what Lucy’s plan was to get the mother out and found her mounted bareback on the semi-wild mare. She coaxed her over to the path her baby had taken and leaned forward, whispering encouraging words in her ear.

RJ fell completely in love with Lucy in that instant.

The horse made careful steps up and out of the gulch, trotting over to RJ and her baby. She nuzzled the foal and tossed her mane as Lucy slid off.

“Fire’s right behind us. Let’s go.” Lucy uncovered the foal’s eyes and used the shirt to wallop the mother on the rump.

The Mustang reared up and let out a tremendous neigh, then took off at a gallop for the bridge. RJ grabbed Lucy’s hand and started running for the bridge. He realized they could feel the heat on their backs as they ran, and the fire was chewing up the distance.

The sweet sound of boots on metal finally greeted them, Tennessee and Heath waiting for them on the other side.

RJ was barely able to catch Lucy before she hit the ground, her legs giving out from under her.

He lowered both of them to the ground and wrapped his arms around her.

“You maniac. Don’t ever do that again.”

He slammed his mouth over hers and swept in, a man possessed. Lucy’s hand slipped around his neck, winding her fingers in his hair, pulling him closer, making the kiss deeper, and deeper still. Her taste was one he would never forget, one he would never erase from his memory, or try to replace. Their tongues met and danced, and visited each other in junction of their lips.

RJ didn’t want to let her go. He wanted the kiss to last forever.

“Hey, lover boy.”

The two of them broke away, reluctantly. Ten was leaning against his side of the truck, and Jaxson was laughing from the cab.

“You’re gonna want to not get naked out here in the dirt, okay? Take the lady back to the house.”
