I’m half asleep when he lays me on my bed, but am startled awake when he starts to remove my jeans.

“Shower and then sleep.”

He kisses my stomach before tracing kisses down one leg and then the other as he slips the jeans off of me. I watch him, my eyes intent on his every movement. When he finishes, I sit up and lift my hand over my head, so he can remove my shirt.

Cold air hits my chest, making me inhale a sharp breath. After he removes his shirt, Travis lays me back down and leans over me. Heightened pleasure coils inside me as I lie beneath the bulk of this beautiful man. His lips trace kisses from my navel to my neck where he devotes the most amount of time. I run my fingers over his neck in lazy circles, never wanting him to stop.

After unsnapping my bra, he sucks my pebbled nipples. My head presses back against the bed while my mouth opens on a silent moan.

“No,” I complain on a strangled groan when he lifts me in his arms and takes me to my shower where a hot spray awaits me.

Travis winks when he places me on the rug in front of the shower and then kisses my jaw. I help Travis out of his jeans and then take his hand, guiding us into the shower. Under the spray, I run my fingers over his chest and then wrap my arms around his neck, pulling his face to me. When our lips touch, everything around us disappears.

Our lips tangle long enough for our souls to join while our bodies flush together, forcing away the air between us. His fingers trail up my thigh, resting his hands on my ass. Pushing me against the shower wall, he presses his thigh between my legs, separating them. With his cock throbbing against me, he rubs, and fluttering ripples of pleasure explode inside of me.

It’s just us. And all I can do is feel.

            Smiling as Noah sprinkles icing sugar onto the pancakes fresh off the skillet, I set the plate onto a tray and arrange it so it looks somewhat fancy.

            “Noah, why don’t you grab the present and I will carry this?” He runs to the tree and digs out the gift we have hidden at the back.

            Together, we walk down the hall and push silently into the bedroom. Ava sleeps peacefully, her lips partly open and her arm flung above her head. She’s so beautiful.

            Noah looks up at me, his eyes shining with excitement, and I nod. Racing to the bed, he jumps on Ava. “Merry Christmas, Momma!”

            Ava blinks sleepily, a smile lighting up her face as she sits up. She kisses Noah on the forehead, her eyes locked on mine, before seeing the tray in my hands. “Oh wow. I’m so spoiled.”

            “Open our present first.” Noah thrusts the gift bag onto her lap, bouncing in place as she pulls out the tissue paper. I set the tray down on her nightstand and move to sit beside her, pulling Noah onto my lap.

            Ava pulls out the canvas Noah and I made for her. Noah painted the background a mixture of greens, blues and purples, all swirling together. He’s inherited his mom’s artistic talent. Together we glued a photo of the three of us and then added some paper flowers I found at a craft store.

            “This is beautiful. You made it?” Her fingers run softly over the textures, eyes locked on the photo. It’s from one of our summer drives, we found this amazing waterfall just off the highway and a tourist was nice enough to take our photo.

            “We fell down the rabbit hole that is Pinterest.” Grinning as she stares at the painting, every painful moment spent on that site is worth the look in her eyes. Ava sets it aside, curling into me.

            “This is the best gift I could have gotten. Thank you.” She tilts her chin up, her lips begging for mine. Kissing her gently, I wrap my arms around my family.

            “You should have heard Dad cursing. Aunty Andie yelled at him.” Noah rats me out, laughing when I tickle him.

            “Shh. You’re going to get me in trouble.” Laughing, I wink at Ava as she pretends to glare at me.

            Handing Ava her breakfast, I watch her and Noah joke around. This is my gift, being with the two most important people in my life, my family. I couldn’t ask for more.

What I failed to see was that the monster had always been right within grabbing distance.

The ground had opened up, and he was screaming.

He was outside the cave, and the trees were falling down everywhere. His broken leg was throbbing and Ujaruk was nowhere to be seen. And then, with a heaving like a bear rolling over a boulder, the thin crack in the ground widened into a huge fissure less than five feet from where he lay on the slanted hillside. Anders screamed again as he began to slide helplessly down the slope toward the yawning, gaping mouth of the hungry earth.

As he grabbed at the turf sliding away beneath him, he saw Ujaruk running toward him from the other side of the widening part in the earth. “Anders? Anders!”

But Anders was sliding down the slope into the chasm, helpless, screaming all the way as Ujaruk shouted his name...

He jerked awake.

His hands were grasping bedsheets, not turf. He was here in his bed, in his house, nowhere near that cave. Safe. He was safe.

It had just been a dream. He hadn’t been swallowed up by the earth. He hadn’t been in danger at all — Ujaruk had got him out of the cave and to the hospital.

Why did I want to be a geologist, again? He wondered muzzily.

Then he realized that part of the dream had been real. Ujaruk was calling his name. “Anders? You awake yet, hon?” There was a knock at the door, which creaked open as Ujaruk shouldered it aside. “Good morning!”

“You’re still here,” Anders said, turning over in the rumpled bed and trying on a smile. “Good morning.”

“Where else would I be?” Ujaruk grinned, holding out a cup of coffee with one hand and a breakfast tray with the other. Four strips of bacon and a scramble of eggs sat on a plate in the middle of it, overshadowed slightly by a bobbing yellow daisy that threatened to fall out of the too-short bud vase it was standing in.

“I had a dream,” Anders said. “I dreamed that — that you’d taken a job in Arizona.” He turned his face away so that the lie didn’t show. His heart was still racing.

“Crazy dream,” Ujaruk commented. “Can you see me in Arizona? I’d roast in nothing at.”

Anders smiled. “I’m glad it was only a dream, then.”

I wonder how much longer I can stay in this cast, he thought as Ujaruk put the tray over him in the bed, smiling weakly at his— boyfriend? Roommate? Coworker...

He turned his mind to the food in front of him as Ujaruk sat down in the single chair next to the bed.

It’s been two months. How many more do we have?
