Author quotes:
“This story came to me in 2002 in my college dormitory. Thirteen years later, it is a novel I am proud to say I love. Teddi and Calvin are characters many find both endearing and infuriating, which I am happy to say, excites me. I think it’s important for your characters to make people both feel and think in as many ways possible. Not always good. Not always bad. Just as life is.”
“I've always been fascinated by the 1930s and 1940s. It’s a complicated time that people seem to equate with Americana, mainly due to the Depression and World War II. I decided to take the idea of acceptance (of others as well as self-acceptance) and make it a major theme. There are many different places in the novel where this theme arises and for so many different reasons with so many different consequences. I based Calvin and Teddi's love story on a ring, a Claddagh ring, representing life, unity, and love.”
“Writing this book felt like I’d found my second home.”
“Her father murdered his father but still she's the darling of their town while he's been forced into poverty.”
“The main characters find love in spite of the hate their families live by. They find bravery in spite of the cowardice their families live by. They find love in spite of the hate their town lived by.”
“The book is about choice. It's about freedom. It's about truth.”
Novel quote
"Teddi slipped her fingers through his hair and studied his mouth. She wanted him so much more than she ever had. Before, she felt drawn to him by some inexplicable force and freed with good feelings when they finally met. Now, it was as if their hearts and souls were tangled and twisted together in a never-ending knot, securing their survival."
