As Emma finds the book freedom she realizes the house her family inherited is from the mid 1800’s, when her ancestors were slaves. Victoria can see Emma outside, so she opens the front door calling for Emma. Then Emma comes up behind her saying, “Yes ma’am, mama I’m right here.” Then Jeremy, Emma’s brother, moves his things upstairs. As he is scared of the sounds he is hearing.
While reading the book Emma realizes her ancestors are very smart. As they prepare themselves for freedom by secretly learning how to read and write. And attempting to deal with Massa’s sexual misbehavior towards the women in the family. Even if one of the daughters Olivia wants a piece of the good life. Not realizing the secrets that are being kept within the family. Olivia’s misunderstanding and lack of knowledge leads to the death of her father Tay-Tay. The grandmother Nana always said this family keeps to many secrets.
Then they run for their freedom out of fear of Henry. As he killed his father Massa and now he is blaming the family. With the exception of Emma, who he is holding hostage because he’s madly in love with her. Of course, Emma tricks him into believing she won’t leave. And when Emma finally escapes Henry goes crazy and blames Emma’s older brother John for taking her.
As the family runs towards freedom they run into Harpo. Sack’s long lost son that was taken from her at an early age. And he joins them on their trip to freedom, as everyone welcomes him with open arms. While settling in at their new home everyone realizes Harpo has mental issues. As Andrew saw Harpo drowning his brother Bubba. Though his mother Sack won’t believe him. Instead, Sack blames everyone for not giving Harpo a chance. Even though, they are giving him a chance and Sack is the only one that can’t see it. As she is too afraid of losing him a second time. But when Sack realizes all of the talk they had really didn’t mean anything and that her son was a very dangerous man, the family took action.
While the success of the community continues to have its demons. The same demons that are beginning to affect the family, especially the women of the house. With Emma being affected the worst of all, as she leaves with Henry to go back south. Proclaiming their love for each other. Emma is then chained up and Henry’s wife demands her to be flogged. While Henry’s cook Granny can see the evil that talks to Emma.
