EXTRACT
Bag over her shoulder and trainers on her feet, Sara De Michele found herself standing in front of the club. Loud music was blasting out from inside the renovated former warehouse that was just as cool as any club in New York with its modern design. Well, not that she’d ever actually been to New York, but that was what the adverts said.
A long line of people were standing in a messy queue outside the entrance while a guy with a headset and gelled hair sticking out in every direction was checking his list and making mechanical gestures with his head to indicate who could enter and who could not.
A list! Daniel hadn’t told her about a list – he’d said it was a surprise party. Sure, right, a surprise party with a guest list! She hoped that it would have occurred to her boyfriend to add her name to it, otherwise Sara would be adding a new item to the list of tortures she was planning to inflict on him.
Though she always did her best to keep her locked away – and almost always managed to – her inner Glenn Close occasionally emerged… too bad that this was really the worst moment possible! She’d been locked in that elevator for more than an hour, forced to listen to her companion in misfortune complaining about his wife, about his job, about the air, about the elevator that was about to plunge to the ground and then about his wife again, his job, the lack of air and the elevator, all in the same order as before. And all the time, all she could think about was the fact that Daniel was out having fun at The Mistress with who knew who. Yes, it was just about the worst moment for her to start losing control.
She diligently placed herself in the queue and waited for her turn. She couldn’t help but notice that all the girls she could see in front of her were wearing high heels, miniskirts and designer clothes.
The minutes passed, and she’d been biting her lip anxiously for so long that it was as numb as if she’d had a dose of botox. Ok, it was time to take out her secret weapon. She hated doing it but Daniel was dancing on the tables in there and there wasn’t a moment to lose – she had to act quickly.
Under the angry gazes of the other people waiting, who looked ready to insult her or rearrange her features, she walked to the front of the queue. She could tell from their faces that if it had been The Walking Dead, she’d have been one of the first to get chewed up by a zombie.
“Hey, there’s a queue!”
“Oy, you with the trainers – get back in line!”
“Excuse me!” she said in a loud, confident voice that belonged to an important person… well, almost. The young boy with the porcupine hairstyle on the door didn’t even lift his head. Great, it was always so gratifying to discover that you were invisible. “Excuse me!” Sara repeated, more loudly this time and standing up straighter as though she could make herself taller through sheer willpower.
“Name!”
Hmm, what a charmer! And a good talker too…
“Sara De Michele. I’m Daniel Gant’s girlfriend!” A subdued murmur rose from the people behind her… Take that.
Mr Porcupine raised his head and smiled. “Of course – please go inside, they are waiting for you!” His smile became a little confused when he noticed how she was dressed, but he carried on as normal. It was evident that Sara had an exclusive pass. She could have arrived in her pyjamas and slippers and he would still have let her in. She was a VIP in spite of herself – it was just a pity that she didn’t feel like one. Sara let her shoulders slump and peered around her, feeling very much as though she were being watched.
“Hey, Sara!” shouted someone who was waving at her from the end of the queue.
Sara blushed and returned the wave shyly. Having a secret weapon is all very well, but she still had to get used to it. She slipped inside the club, took off her jacket and left it in the cloakroom along with her bag. She was definitely dressed too casually, but she decided that today was the day when Sara De Michele would launch a new fashion: an extremely casual streetwear look suited to every occasion, for that year’s winter collection.
