Dark Rivers - new release

RELEASE BLITZ

Book Title: Dark Rivers (Witchbane #2)
Author: Morgan Brice
Publisher: Darkwind Press
Cover Artist: Lou Harper
Genre/s: Urban Fantasy, MM paranormal romance
Length: approx.. 85 000 words

Blurb
One hundred years ago, a sheriff’s posse killed dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory, but his witch-disciples escaped, and their magic made them nearly immortal. To keep their power, each year one of the witch-disciples kills a descendant of one of the men in the posse, a twelve-year cycle that has cost dozens of lives, including that of Seth Tanner’s brother, Jesse.
Seth uncovers the cycle of ritual killings that feeds the power of the witch-disciples, and he's hell bent on getting vengeance for Jesse and stopping the murders. His fledgling romantic relationship with Evan Malone complicates his mission, but Seth can’t walk away. Seth and Evan are learning to navigate their partnership—as lovers and monster hunters—while they chase the next witch-disciple and avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention.
When the hunt takes Seth and Evan to Pittsburgh on the trail of the next killer, they’ll have to save the intended victim and take down the powerful witch. If the skills they possess and the bond between them isn’t enough, the evil will remain unchallenged, and more people will die...

Excerpt
“If the sun hasn’t set yet, and there’s no moon, where’s that blue glow coming from?”
Clouds covered the sky, blotting out the dull, late-afternoon sun, and the overhead branches dimmed the light even more. Yet beneath the trees, the snow reflected a twilight indigo, and the shadows all around beneath the trees seemed to have grown darker.
Seth wasn’t a medium, and he had no talent for seeing or hearing the dead. But his experiences hunting supernatural creatures attuned him to the presence of things that went bump in the night, and now he was certain that they weren’t alone.
“We mean you no harm,” Seth said to the blue glow and the empty forest around them. “We’re just looking for information about the witch. Can you help us?”
A sparkling haze gradually filled in between the leafless trees, and as it shifted on the wind, Seth thought he saw forms and faces. Evan was already laying down a salt circle around where they stood, reinforcing it with iron filings. Both substances interfered with ghosts’ ability to manifest and sapped their strength to cause harm.
“Seth, look.” Evan pointed toward the hanging tree. Where only moments ago, it had been nothing but bare branches, now, a shadowed form swung slowly, suspended by a rope around its neck, the head tilted at an unnatural angle.
“We’re here to end the killing,” Seth said, forcing himself to look away from the hanged man, pushing back the memories of Jesse’s body, suspended like that, soaked with blood. As if he could guess Seth’s thoughts, Evan placed a hand on Seth’s forearm, grounding him to the here and now. “We want to stop the witch that caused your pain, keep him from hurting anyone else.”
Overhead, a cold wind stirred the branches, and the trees creaked and rattled. Seth shivered as the temperature dropped. Figures now stood amid the headstones in the old cemetery, and their stance suggested that they were ready for a fight.
“Give me something I can use to stop the witch,” Seth begged the ghosts. “He went by many names—Thane. Carmody. Brunrichter. Wiegand. Whatever he called himself—we want to make him stop.”
The wind carried the whispers of spectral voices, and the blue mist roiled with internal energy. Evan yanked off his gloves, then withdrew a small slate writing board and a piece of chalk from the pocket of his parka. As Seth continued to talk to the ghosts, he saw out of the corner of his eye as Evan carefully drew one of the sigils he’d been practicing, a bit of rote magic that was likely to come in handy.
Seth feared they might need to fight their way clear since the ghosts seemed more interested in intimidation than supplying information.
Seth’s eyes widened as he saw movement. An invisible hand traced shaky block letters on a snow-covered embankment beside the road. W-A-T-C-H.
“Watch?” Seth repeated aloud. “Watch out?  Watch for something?”
He could feel the press of spirits all around them, and Seth remembered that the ghosts of Blue Mist Road had a reputation for being unfriendly to intruders. Whatever their cryptic message meant, Seth had the feeling they had worn out their welcome.
The mist grew thick around them. Seth realized that the ominous figures from the cemetery had moved closer and that the hanged man was no longer suspended from his noose. He and Evan were safe for the moment within the salt circle, but they were also trapped inside their sanctuary.
“Ready?” Evan asked. He’d been practicing the small magicks that involved drawing arcane symbols and activating them with concentration; those had come more easily to him than the spoken spells Seth had learned. Seth recognized the drawing Evan made on the slate and hoped to hell the banishment sigil worked.
“Go for it,” he said, crossing his fingers.
Evan closed the last line on the sigil and placed his fingertips on the magical symbol, imbuing it with his will and life energy. The drawing flared gold and then white, so bright Seth and Evan had to avert their eyes as a blast wave of light radiated all around them.
When they opened their eyes, the blue mist and the spirits it harbored were gone, as was the writing in the snow.
“Come on,” Seth said, grabbing Evan by the arm and pulling him toward the truck. “Let’s get out of here before they decide to come back.

MY REVIEW

I seriously can’t believe this is my first read by this author. Although I have some of her previous books I just have t had a chance. I’m so glad I read this as I’ll now be reading her others.

DS Grace Allendale has moved back to her home town. Along with working with a new team she has her first murder to investigate. All is not as it seems when the investigation leads her to her step family.

This is a well thought out storyline. Brilliant page turner with plenty of twists and turns. I absolutely loved it. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

 EXTRACT

‘Mr Foxley, how was your flight?’ asks the driver, hurrying to take his suitcase from him.
‘Good, thanks, Terry. Hong Kong has its place but I’m happy to be back on British soil. How’s everything at home?’ he asks, as they walk towards the parked Mercedes.
‘Much the same. I drove your lad to college last week, not that he’s much of a lad any more.’
Oliver smiles. His eldest son, Charlie, was visibly maturing by the week before he departed for the Far East. He wonders what differences the intervening three months will have brought.
The driver is about to open the door for Oliver when a flurry of noise and activity distracts them. Both men turn as several of the airline’s cabin crew exit the building looking remarkably fresh, despite the twelve-hour flight. Dressed in dramatic double-breasted red drape coats with oversized collars, the female crew are a sight to behold. Some wear their coats open, showing a glimpse of white asymmetric frill-front blouses and smart red jackets with nipped-in waists and high collars. Neat, figure-hugging, red pencil skirts with a double pleat at the back and red shoes complete the look. Wheeling her suitcase behind her, the cool blonde air hostess turns in Oliver’s direction and raises her hand to her ear, holding an imaginary phone. As she strides down the pavement with the rest of her crew she bestows him a dazzling smile; all red lipstick and white teeth.
Momentarily forgetting the hierarchy of their relationship, Terry glances at Oliver and raises his eyebrows. Just a couple of blokes acknowledging a mutual understanding. However, as soon as the moment passes he lowers his eyes and, gruffly clearing his throat, opens the car door for his client. But as he places the actor’s suitcase in the boot of the car he allows himself a twitch of a smile.
It’s late afternoon and the British weather is grey and dull. Oliver welcomes the change. During the past three months, Hong Kong has been intense with unseasonably high temperatures and humidity, but filming went well and to schedule, even though they were forced to dodge frequent heavy rains. Now they can concentrate on studio-based scenes, and this means being at home with the family for the foreseeable future. As the Mercedes eases onto the M25 and joins the anti-clockwise traffic, Oliver stretches out his legs and relaxes.
‘I like the new motor, Terry.’
In the rear-view mirror the driver’s eyes meet Oliver’s. ‘Thanks. I’m pleased with it.’
Just over an hour later, the car sweeps in through a pair of opening electric gates onto a gravelled driveway and comes to a halt in front of a handsome lodge house.
‘It’s an early start on Monday, Terry. Apologies,’ Oliver says, as the man opens the door for him.
‘No problem, Mr Foxley. I’ll be here just before five.’
‘At least you’ll be in and out of London before the worst of the traffic,’ Oliver says, by way of compensation.
Opening the car boot, Terry lifts out Oliver’s suitcase and sets it down on the gravel. Nodding at the actor, he climbs back in the Mercedes.
Oliver watches as the car disappears through the stone entrance pillars and turns left onto the track leading to the parish lane. As the electric gates glide to a close, he turns and looks up at the house situated at the base of the North Downs. Hunter’s Moon appears closed. Not even the porch light is on to welcome him home. He tries the door and finds it locked. Extracting a key from his pocket, he inserts it into the lock and opens the front door. He switches on the hall light and quickly punches in the code for the security alarm, then places his suitcase at the foot of the stairs. There’s no sound of family life anywhere in the house. That’s odd. Deanna is usually home at this time with Sebastian and Jamie. He calls out and is met by a stony silence. Walking to the kitchen, Oliver makes a coffee and takes it through to the study, his inner sanctum. As he switches on the computer he glances up at the two paintings displayed above the fireplace. Cara’s brushstrokes still speak to him in a way he can’t put into words, and her gift – the painting of the south coast of Cornwall – never fails to bring an ache to his heart.
Waiting for the computer to power up, Oliver walks over to the French doors and looks out across the extensive manicured lawns leading down to the lake at the edge of the trees. In the late afternoon gloom, all is still. With no suggestion of a breeze, the forest is motionless. Raising his gaze to beyond the tree line, Oliver can still make out the dark bulk of the North Downs. Despite the high welded mesh fence that now defines the property’s boundary – a necessary precaution because of the attentions of the sadly deranged stalker two summers before – it still feels a great house; secluded and away from other properties. Over the years Hunter’s Moon has provided the space to comfortably raise a family away from prying eyes. But children grow up fast and the dynamics are changing. Samantha rarely comes home, such is the draw of the city, and Charlie is already beginning to test his flight feathers. It’s just the two youngest boys, Sebastian and Jamie, at thirteen and eleven, who routinely fill the house with noise and laughter.
Oliver sighs heavily. He hates viewing life like this. It feels so mapped out. His day-to-day existence is never enough and he needs drama, or so he always believed. It wasn’t until he met Cara that he discovered life could be different. Her spiritual, all-seeing essence spoke to him on so many levels that it effectively laid to rest his fears and troubles. But eighteen months is a long time to hold onto the memory of a feeling… Without Cara in his life, he has slipped back into full medication for the depression that has plagued him since late childhood, and recently – worryingly – he’s noticed a tendency to increase that medication.
Oliver closes the curtains and turns away from the French doors. Where are Deanna and the boys? He checks his mobile. No messages from his wife, only one from his agent welcoming him back to the UK and asking him to phone as soon as possible. Logging on, he checks his emails. Several demand his immediate attention. It’s a further forty minutes before he hears the front door open and voices fill the hall. Oliver rises from his chair and walks to the study door. His wife and their two youngest sons stand in the entrance hall.
‘Dad!’ Jamie cries, his eyes lighting up as soon as he sees him. Setting off at a run down the hallway, Jamie bowls straight into Oliver and throws his arms around his dad’s waist.
‘Hello, Jamie,’ Oliver says, hugging his son. The boy’s jacket feels chilly from the early evening air.
‘Hi, Dad,’ says Sebastian, dumping his jacket on the floor. ‘When did you get back?’
‘A couple of hours ago. Where have you been?’ Oliver asks, as Deanna admonishes Sebastian for not hanging up his jacket.
‘Watching rehearsals for Mum’s play,’ Sebastian says, grabbing his jacket and throwing it in the general direction of the coat rack.
‘How’s it going?’ Oliver asks Deanna.
‘Getting there,’ she says, bending to pick up her son’s jacket from the floor and hanging it on a hook.

Psychological Suspense
Date Published: 10/06/18

"Lock the doors and windows...don't talk to anyone...keep the kids with you."

Jenna Bradley knows she needs to be afraid, she just doesn't know what she should be afraid of. An evening phone call from her husband, Eric, rattles her to the core. "I'm coming to get you and the kids. We have to go away for a while."
No explanation, just a few orders laced in panic.
Jenna can only assume that as a reporter, Eric has exposed the wrong people. It’s only a guess. The distance between them grows every day, Eric living his life, Jenna living hers. She doesn’t know what he’s been working on any more than she knows where he went that morning. If only the gunmen holding her and her children hostage believed that.
Eric has the answers Jenna seeks, but when the engine of his private plane stalls over Lake Michigan, his desperation to get home and whisk his family to safety takes a back seat to a seemingly futile struggle to survive.
Federal inmate, Kurt McElroy has answers too, but heavy prison monitoring prevents him from sending a clear warning, not to mention getting the help he needs. The private prison he’s been contracted to is as corrupt as they come, but that corruption reaches beyond the prison walls to officials with everything to lose.
Jenna fears it's her family that will lose, namely their lives. The clock is ticking. The gunmen are growing restless. Can she find an escape before it's too late?

MY REVIEW

This is a new to me author. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for further releases.

I gotta say I really enjoyed this read. Firstly the cover and blurb grabbed me straight away.

Jenna is a strong likeable main character. She will do anything to protect her kids and keep them safe. When her husband rings her to tell her he’s coming to collect the family and they need to go away she knows her life is about to change dramatically. I think I’d have freaked out but Jenna is strong and courageous.

The story was told at a steady pace which I liked. Can’t really say much more without spoilers so I recommend you give this a go. Looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Review: Secrets

Secrets Secrets by Aleatha Romig
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is book one in the Web of Sin trilogy.

What a fabulous start to this trilogy. I couldn’t get enough and read in a day. Thankfully we won’t be left waiting for long for the next two books.

Sterling Sparrow is the new alpha male to grace our presence. He’s off the charts hot and I can’t wait for more of him.
Araneae is a brilliant main female character. I absolutely loved these two characters.

Lots of twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat. After that superb ending I can’t wait to read more of this series and these characters.

Chasing the Sunrise Chasing the Sunrise by H.A. Robinson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is book two in The Young Hearts Duet. Make sure you read The Pebble Jar before you read this story.

We were introduced to Tom in book one so I was delighted to get the chance to read his story.
Through his story we see how thoughtful and kind Tom is. My heart broke for him.

I found this to be a brilliantly written emotional story with plenty of angst. I honestly didn’t want it to end.go read this duet for yourself and feel all the feels. I loved it.

The Pebble Jar The Pebble Jar by H.A. Robinson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It’s been quite a while since I read a YA but I fancied a change of genres so decided to give this a go. I’m so so glad I did as this was a wonderful read.

The author has a great knack with words in that she knows how to make her characters real and her readers feel. She weaves her words in such a way that you can’t help but love and feel for the characters.

This is an ideal young adult story that you would want to read with your son/daughter and chat about it afterwards.

This is a new author to me and I’m delighted I gave her a try. Looking forward to reading more from her in the future.

I love K. Webster’s writing and excited to read a Nikki Ash story as she’s new to me.

Go in blind. I’m sure I say that quite a bit but you just need to with this story. This story pulled me through so many emotions. Definitely one of those stories that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Brilliant characters and one of the best storylines I’ve read this year. These two authors wrote a great story that flowed well together.

As a blogger I crave new storylines. I read so much I need different. Having said that if an author can retell a classic then I’m all in. This is a total awesome read. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

These two authors certainly know how to write. Combine their minds and you get one awesome mess with your head kinda read. This is one of those stories where you are sure it’s gonna go one way and then it goes another way. I absolutely love when a book messes with my head like that.

Robbie, August and Atasha are three fantastic characters. So likeable yet unpredictable.

This without a doubt is going to be one of my favourite reads this year. If your looking for a brilliant well written read that you won’t be able to put down then I highly recommend this gem.

🔪 Invictus 🔪

By Michelle Pace & Yolanda Olson

Grab it here: http://getbook.at/Invictus

I don't like the shadows or the darkness that they hide though it's all I've ever known. Fear resides there—lurking and consuming what little is left of me.

I’m intimate with my demons. I know their game, but I cannot master it. I've been running for a long time but there's only so far to go before they catch me and force me into a devious dance so dark that there’ll be no turning back.

And that's why I need him.

That’s why I came home.

My brother’s my salvation from this malevolence. He's taken inventory of my skeletons and knows how to calm the rage when it washes over me like a typhoon, drowning me in pain and regret. But August doesn't know the monster that I've become. I’m afraid of what he’ll do if he finds out.

He's my salvation and I refuse to lose him.

Not because I got carried away.

And certainly not to her.

Because my older brother has plenty of demons too.

And one of them is sleeping in his bed.

Review: Hush Hush

Hush Hush Hush Hush by Mel Sherratt
My rating: 0 of 5 stars

I seriously can’t believe this is my first read by this author. Although I have some of her previous books I just have t had a chance. I’m so glad I read this as I’ll now be reading her others.

DS Grace Allendale has moved back to her home town. Along with working with a new team she has her first murder to investigate. All is not as it seems when the investigation leads her to her step family.

This is a well thought out storyline. Brilliant page turner with plenty of twists and turns. I absolutely loved it. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

The Broken Winged Angel Series Book 1

When nursing student Jane graduated a semester early and returned home for Christmas break she expected to spend the time visiting her depressed mother, who developed a nasty drug habit after the death of Jane’s father. Jane was instead greeted by her mother being held at gunpoint by her drug dealer “Big Daddy.” In a desperate attempt to save her mother’s life, Jane agrees to work off her mother’s debt as one of Big Daddy’s “entertainers.”
In an instant, Big Daddy has taken everything from Jane including her family, her name and her freedom. As Jane adjusts to her new life as Tatiana, the sex worker, she desperately attempts to hold on to her identity, dignity and any semblance of safety or normalcy. She struggles to navigate the dynamics of living and working with the other girls and how best to cope with servicing the club patrons. Will Jane survive and continue to recognize the woman she sees in the mirror each day?

EXCERPT

Excerpt 3: PG-13
Zach closed the door. It helped to muffle the sounds of the club so we could speak at a decent volume.
“Zach, I—”
He stepped towards me and wrapped both arms around me. He pulled me into his chest, “You scared me. You were bleeding, and crying and you just passed out,” he said.
“I’m sorry,” I said. I wrapped my arms around his torso as well. After a few more seconds he pulled back and held me by my waist. He leaned in and he kissed me. I pushed my mouth back into his a little more firmly. He pushed back. I felt his tongue graze my lower lip. I bit down on his lower lip before I let him slide his tongue into my mouth. He pulled my body closer to his. He felt warm. I slid my hands up his chest and over his shoulders. He stepped back with me towards the desk. I perched on its edge. He pushed himself between my legs. I felt his warm hands move from my bared stomach down onto my hips. He moved one hand onto my thigh and pushed it up under my skirt. He caressed my inner and outer thigh. All the while we remained kissing, now with both our tongues moving against each other. He was the first to break from our lip lock.
“You wanted my help?” he asked.
“Yeah with my hand,” I said.
I had to catch my breath. He lifted my hand and untied the knot. He unraveled it slowly and tossed the dishrag into the waste barrel when it was completely unwound. He pulled gauze and medical tape from the kit. He poured hydrogen peroxide onto one of the gauze pads. I pulled my hand back a little anticipating the sting. Zach reached out and took my hand and gingerly pressed the wet pad onto my wound.
“This kind of reminds me of your first night on the job,” he said.
“Oh yeah! You did bring out the first aid kit didn’t you?”
“Yeah. I totally wanted to take care of you too,” he said.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
He moved his hand over the spot on my leg where a small pink scar laid, “What guy in their right mind would want to miss a chance of playing doctor with you. Plus I thought you were really cute. I wanted to get into your good graces,” he said.
“Why? So I wouldn’t tell Big Daddy you were dealing drugs to us?”
“Well there is that, but I also enjoy being able to do this,” he said as he leaned into me and kissed me once more.
